flying-monkeyI just read that Netflix will be offering “The Wizard of Oz” as a free streaming movie on October 3rd, 2009. The offer is being made in celebration of the 70th anniversary of the film (and to show just how great their streaming service really is).

If you’d like to watch “The Wizard of Oz” streaming from Netflix for free, simply go to www.netflix.com/wizardofoz on Saturday, October 3rd, beginning at 9:00 a.m. ET. During this time, Netflix members can also instantly watch the movie in high definition on our TVs with the use of a Netflix-ready device.

The technology section of USA Today recently ran an article on the Roku Player, one of the most popular Netflix players. Here’s a excerpt.

“…Roku’s simple box, which sounds like a smaller idea, could potentially become even bigger than the DVR, tech analysts say.

If Wood, 43, has his way, the Roku box will be your conduit to anything entertainment-related — TV shows, movies, sports, music — all offered when you want to watch, not when a programmer decides it should be seen. ”

When I first read about the Roku, I immediately understood the potential of this little black box. I was taken away by its small size, array of connection options, and ease of use, but the price tag really jumped out at me. It just amazes me that we can spend $99 and have an easy way to watch any of the 17,000 available streaming movies on Netflix.

The USA Today article ends with a mention of the new things coming to the Roku player:

“Wood recently added Major League Baseball games to the Roku lineup — available on a subscription basis — and plans to launch a video application store, similar to Apple’s App Store for the iPhone.

But for now, it’s all about movies, TV shows and sports.

McQuivey says he has tried all the devices that can deliver Internet video to the TV — Apple TV, the Blu-ray players, streaming via gaming systems Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 — but the one he keeps coming back to is Roku.

‘It’s so darn easy, the content is already there, and it’s so simple anyone in the family can use it.’ ”

If any of you already have a Roku, I’d love to get a discussion going. Leave a comment below!

Hello and welcome to WatchStreamingMovies.com! We’ve spent the past few months researching how you can enjoy streaming movies at home and put together all the information in this site.

After a just a little surfing around, you’ll find that we’re pretty big fans of Netflix. The reason is simple: I’ve been a Netflix member for several years now and I have nothing but great things to say. I hate to sound like I’m giving a sales pitch, but it really is a great deal. Sometimes I wonder why I even continue to subscribe to the local cable company.

Also on the site you’ll find lots of information about the various devices that are compatible with the Netflix streaming service. I personally use the Xbox 360, which works great. A friend of mine uses a Samsung Blu-ray player that he claims works really well too. I really want to try out one of the newer Roku digital video players for the TV in my bedroom. If I ever do, you can bet I’ll talk about it here.

Well, that’s it for my intro. Have a look around and leave me a comment below if you have a question or simply want to say hello!
